Sounds like United personnel haven't changed since I stopped flying with them some 12 years ago. Best to always book via a different airline if at all possible.

United Airlines - *** poor online service

United Airlines - Worst customer service of any airline will never fly United

They rebooked our 1:45 layover to a 40” layover. They were late on our connection. We ran through the airport and they closed the door on our crying kids instead of waiting 30 seconds for us to board. Unbelievably poor customer service. Rebooked us for 24 hours later. No hotel voucher or anything.
