UA charges $200 for ticket cancellation

I purchased two tickets to Argentina with my award miles.My husband developed DVT and Pulmonary Embolism, his doctor prohibited him to flight until both problems are solved.When I tried to cancel the tickets UA did not want to recognized the medical emergency, even with a note from the doctor.The charge is $200 to cancel and put the miles back into my account.
We have been loyal customers of UA for many years,if they can not recognize that I will take my business to another airline.
I am very upset with United Airlines,the not friendly skies.
